Soil / Climate: Grows in moist, fertile soil, as well as dry rocky soil. Prefers sun or partial shade. Hardy and slow growing.
Notes: Leaves are oval, wavy toothed, and straight veined. Leaves turn bright yellow to brown in the fall. Fruit appears in a small capsule, 1/2 inch long, covered with fine hairs. Oil from the fruit is used for medicinal purposes. Blooms are yellow
Wildlife: The seed is eaten by turkey, bobwhite, pheasant, cardinal, and is prized by the ruffed grouse along with the buds.
