Other common names: northern bayberry, bayberry, candle-berry
Mature Height: 3-8 ft.
Soil / Climate: Sterile, sandy soil, but will grow in swamy soil as well.
Notes: Long, slender leaves with a few rounded teeth at the tip. Turns bronze or dark green in autumn. Great for erosion control.
Wildlife: Fruit is popular with turkey, ruffed grouse, bobwhite, pheasant, tree swallows!, several varieties of woodpeckers, and many others. Makes excellent cover for wildlife due to its nearly everygreen nature.
