Latin: Corylus cornuta
Other common names: beaked filbert, beaked hazelnut, filbert
Mature Height: 5-15′
Soil / Climate: Prefers rich, well drained soils. Tolerant of full sun to partial shade. Beaked Hazelnut grows farther north into Canada. Cold tolerant.
Notes: Beaked Hazelnut is named from its fruit, which is a nut enclosed in a husk with a tubular extension that resembles a beak. The nuts, which are surrounded by a hard shell, are edible. Nuts are tiny, pea-sized, as compared to dime-sized European hazelnut varieties, but very flavorful.
Wildlife: They provide excellent browse and shelter for deer and other wildlife. Deer, many small mammals and birds enjoy its spring growth as well as autumn’s mature, protein-rich nuts. Attract deer by growing on edge of yard in a hedge.
