Latin: Tsuga canadensis

Zones: 3-7a

Other common names: Canada hemlock

Mature Heigh/spreadt: 60-75 ft. high 25-35 ft. spread in ideal conditions. Hemlock has a slow to medium growth rate.

Soil / Climate: Hemlock likes cool, moist areas, very tolerant and will grow in dense shade. Able to tolerate full sun in cooler northern climate. Does not tolerate drought. Enjoys winter mulch.

Notes: Hemlock is conical or pyramidal shape having soft, graceful, horizontal to pendulous branches, fine texture. Small cones, about 0.5" to 1.0" long turning light brown in the fall. Hemlock are excellent evergreens for screening use in shaded locations where most needle evergreens fail. 

Wildlife: Ruffed grouse will eat the needles. Variety of birds use the seed as food. Deer like to browse the foliage or rub off the bark with their antlers.
