Mature Height/Spread: 40-50 ft high/50-60 ft spread. In ideal conditions slow to medium grower with less than 12″ up to 24″ per year.

Soil / Climate: The Chinkapin oak grows well in acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, sandy, well-drained, wet and clay soils. Tolerates wet conditions and some drought. Chinquapin does best in areas that are well-drained and have not experienced severe drought. Enjoys full sun.

Notes: Shade and ornamental. Leaves are similiar to an American Chestnut hence the name Chestnut Oak. Leaves are dark yellowish green and fall color can very from yellow to yellow-brown to brown.

Wildlife: Chinkapin oak acorns are enjoyed and preferred by wild turkeys, grouse, white-tailed deer, black bears, chipmunks, squirrels and hogs. Cattle will eat the leaves.
