Description

Latin: Calycanthus floridus

Mature Height: 6-10′ by 6 to 12′ wide

Soil / Climate: tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Full sun and partial shade tolerant. Plants grown in full sun will be shorter than those grown in part shade.

Notes: Grows in a dense round form at a moderate rate of 12 to 18 inches per year in ideal conditions. Flowers are dark, reddish brown to wine-red and are 1 to 2 inches wide shaped somewhat like a magnolia, long lasting and can be extremely fragrant. Sweet shrub leaves are relatively large, from 4 to 6 inches long and 2 to3 inches wide. In summer leaves are dark green and in fall golden yellow. Fruit is eliptical, 1 to 2 inches long and contains many seeds. Spreads by suckering.

Wildlife: White-tail deer will browse the foliage.
