Description

Latin: Maclura pomifera

Zones: 4-10

Other common names: bois-d’arc, bodark, bowwood, hedge apple, hedge-apple, mockorange

Mature Height: 10-50 ft.

Soil / Climate: Native in southern Arkansas, to Oklahoma and eastern Texas. Naturalized widely from New England and Michigan, south to Texas and Oregon. Also found in the Pacific Northwest.

Notes: leaves turn bright yellow in fall, thorny branches, often used as hedge, bears inedible round fruit 3-5″ in diameter. The fruit is prized for it’s ability to repel insects and spiders when scattered around home foundations. The wood is sought after for recurve bow making. Both male and female plants are needed to produce fruit. All our osage orange are grown from seed, so we are unable to grade the plants by sex prior to shipment. The ratio is up to mother nature. Please plant enough to assure pollination.

Cold Stream Farm supplies Osage Orange trees which are grown as bare root seedlings and transplants and sold both wholesale and retail with no minimum order.
