Despite sharing a genus, our Viburnum shrubs are quite different in their size, shape, and color. All Viburnum plants are native to the northern hemisphere, with over 100 varieties of flowering deciduous species found all over the world.
Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum)
Arrow Viburnum is a small berry-producing shrub that is native to eastern North America (from Maine down to Florida, west as far as Texas). They have a medium growth rate of 1-2 feet per year, topping off at a mature height of up to 15 feet. To identify an Arrowwood Viburnum, look for dark green leaves, white flowers, or dark purple berries. The leaves turn reddish yellow in the fall, and the flowers and berries attract a large amount of bird and insect species.
Able to grow in USDA zones 3-8, Arrowwood viburnum plants tolerate a wide range of ground and climate conditions with a ton of protection against overly wet soil. It is said that Native Americans used young stems of Arrowwood Viburnum plants to create arrow shafts.

Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium)
Blackhaw Viburnum, also known as black haw, sweet haw, and stag bush, is a flowering bush that is also native to the United States. In the wild, Blackhaw bushes are found spanning Missouri to Pennsylvania, with some populations edging into Kansas, Connecticut, and more.
Grown in USDA zones 3 – 9, a mature Blackhaw plant can reach the dimensions of 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. They prefer full sun and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions to also yield a growth rate of 1-2 feet per year.
Like the Arrowwood, Blackhaw Viburnum plants have dark green leaves which turn red in the fall, white flowers that bloom in the spring, and dark fruit that attract many birds and land mammals.

Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum)
Cold Stream Farm sells wholesale and retail Highbush Cranberry plants, which is a Viburnum species that may also be called American cranberry bush, cranberry bush viburnum, or cranberry high bush. These plants are native in our home state of Michigan, with other wild growths found throughout the northeastern United States and Canada.
Unlike Blackshaw and Arrowwood Viburnum, Highbush Cranberry trees can be recognized by their bright fruits which persist through the winter. Edible to both humans and wildlife, Highbush Cranberry fruit is just as popular in jams, jellies, and sauces as it is with turkey, grouse, and songbirds.
Highbush Cranberry growths are hardy, self-sustaining plants that can thrive well in both moist and dry soil conditions. Typical plants grow to be between 6 and 15 feet tall spanning 8 to 10 feet in width.

Nannyberry Viburnum (Viburnum lentago)
Densely native from Minnesota to Maine and beyond, the Nannyberry Viburnum is another flowering plant that is commonly found in our home state of Michigan. The Nannyberry is an attractive and useful plant that bears edible fruit and white, fragrant flowers. Other names for the Nannyberry include the sheepberry, wild raisin, and sweet viburnum.
After sprouting with a light color, a nannyberry is nicknamed the “wild raisin,” because they turn black and shrink in the winter. The “raisins” attract many game birds, songbirds, and mammals if left unprotected and unpicked. Other parts of the plant, such as the bark and leaves have also been used for medicinal purposes.
Nannyberry bushes transplant well, able to adapt to primarily moist soil conditions in USDA zones 3 to 7. A mature Nannyberry bush can reach as high as 20 feet tall, with a spread of between 10 and 15 feet. Suckers can be pruned to keep plants shapely.

Witherod Viburnum (Viburnum Cassinoides)
Finally, the Witherod is another species that bears many of the most common qualities of Viburnum plants. They tolerate wet conditions well and produce white flowers and dark fruits. Here, Witherod plants typically bloom a bit later in the season than their close relatives, allowing for a garden to achieve a more rolling bloom.
