Latin Name: Juniperus virginiana
Common Name: Eastern Red Cedar, Red Juniper, Virginia Juniper
Zone: 2-9
Mature Height: Generally, grows 30-50 feet (9-15 meters) tall, with a similar or slightly wider spread approximately 8-20 ft. It often has a conical or columnar shape.
Soil/ Climate: Eastern North America. Thrives in sandy, loamy, and rocky soils. Tolerates drought conditions. Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Eastern Red Cedar is considered a very fast grower in central to southern US states but can be a slow grower in colder climates or poor soils. Red cedar trees have a very wide native range from the deep south to well into Canada.
Notes: Foliage: Dense, scale-like leaves that are green to blue green, turning brownish or bronze in winter. Mature trees are prickly to the touch. Bark: Reddish-brown, fibrous, and peeling off in strips. It is prized for its resistance to rot. Red Cedar fruit is gray or bluish-green, 1/4″ in diameter and resembles a berry, but is a cone. Transplant 5-8 feet apart to create a dense visual block. Conical in shape. The Red Cedar cones are used to flavor gin. The timber has a pleasant smell as the aromatic wood is used in furniture and closets; acts as a natural insect repellent. Commonly called pencil cedar as it was used in the pencil industry for over a century until supplies became depleted.
Problems: Diseases: Susceptible to cedar-apple rust and cedar-hawthorn rust. The tree can become infested with scale insects and other pests, like the cedar bark beetle. Leading to health decline in individual trees and potential spread to other conifers.
Wildlife: Food Source: Berries are consumed by birds such as cedar waxwings and robins. The dense foliage of Eastern Red Cedar provides excellent nesting habitat for many bird species. It offers shelter from predators and harsh weather. Species such as sparrows, finches, and the Eastern Bluebird often nest in its branches. The tree’s structure also provides cover for mammals, including rabbits and larger species such as deer, which use it for shelter.
Cold Stream Farm supplies eastern red cedar trees which are grown as bare root seedlings and transplants and sold both wholesale and retail with no minimum order.
