Latin Name: Pinus resinosa

Common Name:  Norway pine, hard pine, pitch pine

Zone: 2-6

Mature Height: Red Pine is a coniferous evergreen tree known for its tall, straight growth, reaching heights of 50 to 100 feet and widths of up to 30 feet, with a trunk diameter of 1 to 3 feet. It experiences rapid growth during its first 60 to 70 years.

Soil/ Climate: Red Pine flourishes in various soils and climates, native to the Northeastern United States, from Pennsylvania to Canada and into parts of Michigan. Although this species is intolerant of shade, it thrives in windy areas and prefers well-drained sandy soils. Red Pine is a long-lived tree, with a potential lifespan of up to 500 years.

Notes: Red Pine needles are slender, measuring approximately 4 to 6 inches in length, and typically grow in pairs. The bark is thick and scaly, displaying a reddish-brown color that is characteristic of the species. Red Pine is highly valued for its wood, which is utilized in construction, furniture making, and paper products. The wood is strong and straight-grained, making it suitable for various applications. Its adaptability and resilience make Red Pine a popular choice for reforestation projects and erosion control efforts.

Problems: Red Pine can encounter several challenges that may affect its health and growth, including pests and diseases. Insects like the red pine bark beetle can infest and damage trees, weakening them and potentially leading to mortality. Pine weevils can also harm young trees, causing stunted growth and deformities. Additionally, Red Pine is susceptible to diseases such as root rot and needle blight, which can weaken or kill the trees, particularly under stressful conditions. Extended periods of drought can further stress Red Pine, increasing their vulnerability to pests and diseases.

Wildlife: Red Pine forests serve as habitats for a variety of wildlife species, including birds, mammals, and insects. The trees provide nesting sites and food sources, especially for species that thrive in open, sunny areas. Similar to Jack Pine, Red Pine also supports birds like warblers, woodpeckers, and ruffed grouse, as well as mammals such as white-tailed deer, red squirrels, and bears.

Cold Stream Farm supplies Red Pine trees which are grown as bare root seedlings and transplants and sold both wholesale and retail with no minimum order.
