Description

This plant is restricted for shipment to CA, ID

Latin Name: Pinus nigra

Common Name: Black pine, European black pine

Zone: 3-7

Mature Height: Austrian Pine typically grows 50 to 60 feet tall and can reach up to 100 feet in optimal conditions.

Soil/ Climate:  Austrian pine is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, rocky, and clay soils. Originally from Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region, it has been widely planted in North America.  Austrian Pine prefers full sun to grow well, is intolerant of shade and is resistant to snow and ice damage.

Notes:  The needles are dark green, usually in bundles of two, and can be 3 to 6 inches long. The cones are cylindrical, 2 to 4 inches long, and can remain on the tree for several years. Austrian Pine is often used as a windbreak when planted in a row. Its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils make it a popular choice for urban and suburban landscapes. It can also be used for erosion control due to its sturdy nature.

Problems: Generally resistant to many pests, but can be susceptible to certain diseases, such as pine wilt and needle blight. Pine Wilt shows in needle discoloration and dieback, typically resulting in tree death within a few weeks. Needle blight shows when the Needles start yellowing, browning, and eventual drop. This can lead to reduced vigor and aesthetic issues.

Wildlife: The tall, straight trunks and dense canopies of Austrian pines create a sheltered habitat for various bird species, small mammals, and insects. Their height offers excellent perches and nesting sites for birds. The horizontal branches provide ideal nesting opportunities for species like owls, woodpeckers, and songbirds, while the thick foliage protects nesting birds from predators and harsh weather. The cones of Austrian pines produce seeds that serve as a food source for many birds, including squirrels, crossbills, and woodpeckers. These seeds are rich in protein and fat, making them a crucial energy source, particularly in winter. Additionally, the needles can be eaten by herbivores such as deer and small mammals when other food is scarce. Austrian pines also support a variety of insects, which in turn provide nourishment for birds and other wildlife, with predators like bats feeding on these insects as well.

Cold Stream Farm supplies Austrian Pine trees which are grown as bare root seedlings and transplants and sold both wholesale and retail with no minimum order.
