Description

Latin: Picea abies
Zones: USDA 2–7
Other Common Names: European Norway Spruce, Common Norway Spruce
Mature Height: Typically 50–80 ft tall in landscapes, but capable of exceeding 120 ft in ideal native conditions; 25–35 ft spread
Soil/Climate: Grows best in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils; thrives in full sun; withstands cold, wind, and heavy snow loads; not suited for prolonged drought or extreme summer heat
Notes: Stately evergreen known for its rapid growth, symmetrical conical shape, and elegant drooping branchlets on older trees. Dark green, four-sided needles measure about ½–1 inch, remaining year-round. Produces long, slender hanging cones 4–7 inches in length—the largest among spruces—that mature to a light brown. Bark starts thin and orange-brown, becoming scaly with age.
Wildlife: Dense year-round foliage offers windbreaks and shelter for songbirds, owls, and small mammals. Cones provide seed for red squirrels, crossbills, and other finches. Lower branches can serve as protective cover for deer in winter.
